On Demand and On Demand Entries

What is On Demand (VOD)?
On Demand is a service offered by cable companies through digital cable that allows you instant access to a library of programs and movies to be watched at any time. With On Demand you can start, stop, pause, fast-forward and rewind a selected program or movie, using your remote control.

Available content is chosen by the cable company and stored on cable company server (Example: Re – run of the local news available for 24 hours or until cable company updates content). On Demand includes a broad range of services and programming. Video On Demand (VOD) is one type of On Demand service. On Demand is not available in all areas. Limited On Demand options available through some satellite providers (most satellite providers only offer Movies on Demand at this time).

Three Types of On Demand:
• Free On Demand: (i.e. local news on demand, etc.). These channels show programming from a specific station or network and are available to watch whenever the viewer wants. These programs usually include an episode number and some programs may also have an original date and start time.

• Premium Channels On Demand: A group of channels where original programming and movies are available at the viewer’s convenience. The channels are usually associated with a monthly fee in addition to your monthly fee for digital cable.

• Movies On Demand: A library of current and classic movies offered to watch when you want. Generally the viewer is charged a per-view fee of $3.99 or more for these movies.

How do I enter On Demand viewing in the Diary?
Please write in the episode number or original date/time for each On Demand diary entry along with the program name and channel. Some shows will have an episode number as part of the program name, or they might have an original date and time, or neither. If you don’t have this information, please enter what information is available to you.

How do I know if I have On Demand?
On Demand is a service offered only by digital cable providers. At this time, not all digital cable providers offer this service. If you have On Demand, you should be able to access one or more channels on your TV that say they are “On Demand” or have On Demand programming available. You can select these programs to watch at your own convenience.

I have a wide variety of services, how are these services different from On Demand?
On Demand differs from “Pay-Per-View” because On Demand programming is available for you to watch at any point, not at a pre-selected time. Also, On Demand usually offers a wide variety of programs and movies, whereas Pay-Per-View is typically associated only with movies and specials. It is also possible to select some movies to watch On Demand on a “per view” basis, but these are all available to be watched at the viewer’s convenience.

On Demand is different from a digital video recorder (DVR) in that, with On Demand, only certain programs or movies are available to watch. Also, with On Demand, you do not have to set up a program to record, as you do with a DVR. On Demand programs are available by selecting from a library of programs or movies offered by individual TV networks.
