What
is a DVR (Digital Video Recorder)?
What
is a DVR (Digital Video Recorder)?
A
device that allows you to both record and playback programs at your convenience without the
use of videotape or disc. You can record a single TV program or a series with the push of a
button. You can pause, rewind or fast forward live TV using your remote control. A DVR can
be a service provided by your cable/satellite company or a TiVo type stand-alone electronic
device. Other DVR features allow you to record two shows at the same time, build a library
of recorded shows, and watch recorded shows whenever you want.

What
is the difference between a DVD recorder (Digital Video Disc Recorder) and
a DVR (Digital Video Recorder)?
Generally, a DVD-Recorder is a device that can play DVD’s and record shows
or movies onto DVDs, although there are different types of DVD-R’s. Some DVD Recorders
require you to insert a digital videodisc (DVD) and program each recording manually like
you would with a VCR. Other DVD-R’s allow you to record TV programs with a push of a
button (like a DVR). These DVD-R’s can allow you to record TV programs and then also
record them onto a DVD. The DVD-R’s that function like a DVR allow you to start, stop,
pause, fast-forward and rewind a program using your remote control.
What
does it mean to time-shift a program with my DVR?

You
have time-shifted a program anytime you use a DVR to pause, rewind, or
delay the time you watch a program. That is, you no longer are
watching it at the exact time it was telecast.
How
to make Diary Entries when Watching Recorded Programs
TV
Programs recorded on a DVR (Digital Video Recorder) and entries in the
Diary
Most
all DVR’s are designed to record any TV program to which they are tuned.
Also, most DVRs have a programming capability to seek out and record any
programs that you tell it are of interest to you. Since you may not
watch most of those programs, it is not necessary for you to write in the
diary every DVR-recorded program if no one watches them. Please
write in the diary only those TV programs that were recorded during your
survey week and that you or other household members actually do watch.
What
do I write if I am watching a program I recorded prior to the survey week?
We
prefer that you do not enter viewing of programs recorded prior to the
start of the survey week. We only report information on programs
aired during the survey week. Please just write "Watching a
program recorded prior to survey week," in the Name of Program
column. Put an "X" in the columns for the household
members who are watching. Draw lines down under each column to
indicate how long the recorded program was watched.
What
do I write if I am watching a program I recorded during the survey week?
If
you are watching a DVR-recorded program that was recorded during the
survey week, enter the channel name, number, and name of program on the
page for the day and time it is being watched. Put an “X” in the
columns for the household members who are watching. Write “DVR”
and the date the program was recorded next to the program name. Draw
lines down under each column to indicate how long the program was watched.
See the example below.
When
viewing a previously recorded TV program, do I list who watched?
Yes.
Please mark an “X” under the name of each person to indicate who
watched the program if the program was recorded during the diary-keeping
week. Next to the program name, write "DVR" and the date
the program was recorded. Put an "X" in the columns for
the household members who are watching. Draw lines down under each
column to indicate how long the recorded program was watched.
Do
I have to write down everything my DVR records during the survey?
No.
Please just write in programs as you watch them during your survey
week.
I
use my DVD-R like a DVR, how do I enter my TV viewing?
If watching a program
recorded on your DVD-R during the survey week, enter the channel name, number, and name of program on the page for the day and time it is being watched. Write “DVR” and the date the program was recorded next to the program name. Put an “X” in the columns for the household members who are watching.
Draw lines down under each column to indicate how long the program was watched.
